Board Responsibilities:

The Advisory Board is a critical community champion of the Genesis Joy House Homeless Shelter, Inc. (Genesis) nonprofit. Members of the Advisory Board Committee share their gifts in service to our mission by providing our organization with their professional expertise; their diverse knowledge of constituent perspectives; their connections to local, national, or international resources, colleagues, or peers; their philanthropic support or other forms of needed assistance. The committee has no governing function within the organization.

Reasons for Creating an Advisory Board Committee:

1. Provides a means for involving people who are willing to give critical assistance but have limited time.
2. Provides a means for involving people who would have been good candidates for the Board of Directors, but who are unable to serve right now.
3. Provides a way to keep critical supporters connected to the organization.
4. Creates a direct link to important professional and technical expertise.
5. Energizes advisors as ambassadors for the organization in the community.
6. Recognizes individuals for their distinguished service.
7. Assists in efforts to increase philanthropic support.
8. Enlists help from others without enlarging the governing board.

Structure:

1. Elected by the board of directors.
2. A minimum of five to a maximum of seven slots.
3. Open invitation to attend board meetings, but in a non-voting capacity.
4. Could have an ex-officio position dedicated to a particular institution (e.g. president of a civic club or university) or even government officials (e.g. senators, governors, mayors).

Expectations:

1. Offer much-needed wisdom, experience, and creative solutions to fundraising organizations.
2. Bringing fresh eyes and diverse perspectives, a well-structured advisory board can bring stability to a fledgling organization or help it grow to new heights.
3. Act annually in some significant way to support the organization’s mission (e.g., expert advice, funding, or fundraising).
4. Allow the organization to publicize their name and participation on the Advisory Board, list names on letterhead, and other communications.
5. Attend events such as the annual meeting and special gatherings.
6. Keep informed about plans, activities, and needs of the organization.
7. Recruit committee members.
