Job Summary: The Barista position will contribute to the overall success of the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary Cafe, by embracing the culture valued by ARS. The Barista is responsible for preparing and serving high-quality beverages and food in the coffee shop, as well as providing exceptional customer service in the gift shop. Employees over 21 years old will also be trained and scheduled to serve alcoholic beverages as bartenders. All employees are expected to maintain a clean, welcoming environment and work collaboratively to ensure smooth operations in all areas. Key Responsibilities: General Responsibilities (All Employees): Provide outstanding customer service in the coffee shop, gift shop, and other assigned areas. Prepare and serve coffee, tea, specialty drinks, and food items according to company standards. Assist in the gift shop with customer inquiries, restocking, and retail sales. Maintain cleanliness and organization of all work areas, including the coffee shop and gift shop. Operate the point-of-sale system to process orders and transactions accurately. Follow health and safety regulations, including food handling, cleanliness standards, and workplace safety. Bartending Responsibilities (Employees Over 21 Only): Mix and serve alcoholic beverages, including cocktails, beer, and wine, according to recipes and company standards. Verify customer identification to ensure compliance with legal drinking age requirements. Maintain knowledge of bar inventory, drink recipes, and alcohol service protocols. Adhere to alcohol service laws and company policies to provide a safe environment for all customers. Teamwork and Collaboration: Work cohesively with team members to ensure smooth operations in all areas. Be adaptable and willing to shift between coffee shop, gift shop, and (for employees over 21) bar responsibilities as needed. Communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors to complete tasks efficiently. Knowledge and Passion for Coffee, Retail, and Alcohol (as applicable): Stay informed about coffee blends, brewing techniques, menu changes, and gift shop products. For employees over 21, maintain knowledge of bar operations, drink recipes, and alcohol safety standards. Demonstrate a passion for customer service and a willingness to learn and grow in all areas of the role. Qualifications: Skills and Experience: Prior experience in customer service, food and beverage, or retail is a plus but not required. For bartending responsibilities (21+), prior bartending experience or willingness to learn is preferred. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail. Basic math skills for handling transactions and, for bartending, measuring drink ingredients. Age Requirements: Must be at least 16 years old to work as a Barista. Must be at least 21 years old to perform bartending responsibilities. Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Food safety and alcohol service certifications (e.g., TABC, ServSafe) are a plus or will be provided as part of training for eligible employees. Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long periods and perform repetitive tasks. Capability to lift and carry items up to 30 pounds, such as coffee bean bags, retail products, or bar supplies. Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Work Environment: Flexible availability, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Willingness to assist in coffee shop, bar (if over 21), and gift shop areas as needed. Preferred Qualities: Friendly and approachable demeanor. Team player with a proactive attitude. Passion for coffee, retail, bartending (if applicable), and providing excellent customer service. Note: Employees under 21 will not be required to bartend but will focus on coffee shop and retail responsibilities.
